Gebrüder Mönnig have been making woodwind instruments for over 100 years in Germany, crafting their work with the highest quality using precision handmade craftsmanship. They are based in Markneukirchen, home to many famous instrument makers in Germany. Monnig made this Alto Flute during the time of the GDR, so before 1990.
The alto flute, unlike the flute in C, delivers a mellow tone and lower notes, and actually plays a fourth lower than the regular flute (half an octave lower). It produces a beautiful deep sound, adding depth and tone to the flute section.
Another difference between the alto flute and the regular flute is the thicker, longer tube of the alto flute compared to the flute in C. This requires the player to exert more breath control, which can take practice and time to master.
This particular flute exemplifies fine craftsmanship and is beautifully constructed, with very heavy silver plating. It includes a straight head and plays beautifully and freely with a lush, rich tonal quality
